"A Journey through Beln Cemetery" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-22 07:46:00

Theres something about the Panton de Beln cemetery in Guadalajara. Mexico that simply takes your breath away. This old graveyard turned museum is a unique attraction and comes with a few old legends and folk tales that have drawn in curious residents and tourists to see if they could actually be true. The Beln cemetery was built in 1848 by brilliant architect Manual Gomez Ibarra who also undertook the rebuilding of the Guadalajara Cathedral towers after the originals were destroyed in a massive earthquake in 1985. The Panton de Beln served as the cemetery for the Old Civil Hospital which to this day still remains (reconstructed of course) and sits right next to the Panton de Beln. Even well after the cemetery closed in 1896 this beautiful landmark is a sight to behold and is truly a magnificent work of art. Upon entering youll be amazed to find a long mausoleum wall on either side of the main entrance. The 100 mausoleum arches which decorate the corridors are painted in a bright and cheerful orange color. They are a welcoming contrast to the somber surroundings and only add to the beauty of the grey and weathered tombs that adorn the cemetery grounds. The original layout of the cemetery consisted of 2 sections known as patios a section for the rich which still remains today and a section for the poor. Unfortunately the second section for the poor was demolished in 1967 supposedly due to unrecognizable grave markers. The Specialty Tower for the Old Civil Hospital now stands where the second patio used to be. While walking through the peaceful grounds the tour guide will recant the rich history of the Panton de Beln. They will tell you of the great legends that have made Beln cemetery quite famous throughout the state of Jalisco and all of Mexico for that matter. (Tours in English are available for larger groups if scheduled ahead of time.)The legends included are those like the Legend of the Vampire or El Vampiro who stalked the citizens of Guadalajara and lies entombed under a giant tree in the cemetery. The legend says that if a branch is broken instead of sap you will see blood trickling down the blood of all the innocent victims. In the past a large number of visitors tried to break the branches to see if the legend was true. The tree was on the verge of dying from all the damage so a fence had to be built around it for protection. According to the legend if the tree dies the vampire will be released! There is also the legend of a young and terminal cancer patient who was treated at the Old Civil Hospital and sadly took his own life in the Panton de Beln in a gruesome way. These are just a few among many others this popular attraction provides and to add to your experience they offer night tours as well. You will be efully guided through the cemetery in pitch black night with only your flashlight to guide you. I have heard the night tours are especially fun and come highly recommended. To really enjoy the experience you might want to visit during the day first to see everything and then take the tour at night. Let us see if you can catch a glimpse of any spirits!Make the Belen cemetery (Panton de Beln) one of the first top things to do on your list when you are in Guadalajara. Mexico. 29,025 travel experiences from 145 countries shared this week • • Who is in Rach. Eric and his Dad picked me up at the airport and whisked me off in a jeep no less straight to the beach! After a quick swim we shuttled off down some crazed dirt back roads to another land and had dinner right on the smooth. having got up at 4am I put up no protests when the gents ordered my dinner for me and a tequilla..  The next day we got up early to see some turtles hatching. These cutie tiny little turtles braved their way from their eggs on the end of the smooth and into the sea.  Leatherback turtle mums only give birth every five years so we were pretty lucky to surprise them take their first steps.  A lady on the beach told us though that only  1 in a 1000 survive though there were definate conservation efforts on the land to help them out. It was Erics last day in Mexico so he wanted nothing but land and we were willing to oblidge. After hours of boogie boarding and sun soaking Rach and I got on a jet ski. Ive never seen her so terrified and it was of course hilarious for me! Except when she insisted she saw Eric waving at us to come in. and that I had to head back to the beach. only it wasnt and I was well out of designated jet ski govern and headed towards one petrified large white man. Teach me to be too lazy to feature my glasses! I bet he has a holiday story to tell.. (due to my extreme skills on a jet ski he lived to express the tale). We dropped Eric off at the airport and waved goodbye to our spanish speaker and headed into Puerto Vallerta town. Wandered around along the beach front of course and tried a few drinks. Coronas are about $1 which im very excited about. Today we pretty much got up and headed to the bus stop and grabbed a five hour ride to here. We booked ourselves first class seats they were fantastic even gave us leg rests and a little snack bag with a sandwich! hehe. Wandered around here there is a huge old section of town I cant act to get a proper look at tomorrow. We have booked ourselves in for two nights at this hilariousy shabby hotel right come the old section. it has free internet tho! Its so great travelling around again and Im loving having to navigate around again with no language skills. Rach can count to ten though so we figure we are set. "Operation Smile - Guadalajara MEXICO 2007" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-12 18:29:25

I had the privelege of going to Mexico as an Operation grimace volunteer! I undergo wanted to go on another mission since I had the opportunity in May 2002 to go to Peru. come up I got my chance! I worked in the Operating Room with an international team from Mexico. Bolivia. Peru. Venezuala. Ecuador and more. During the week we performed surgery on almost 100 children (and a bring together adults) performing almost 200 procedures! What a great accomplishment and for the people especially the babies and children and their parents.. what a life changing experience. This is Yolando a young girl who was muy inteligente! She knew everything there was to experience about her surgery.. how desire it would take.. what the nurses and doctors were going to do... I was amazed especially because her Spanish was easy to understand and I was able to agree with everything she told me. She wanted me to take a picture of her so here it is! The little boy in the hat just happened to be the Birthday Boy. I did my best rendition of "Feliz Cumpleanos a Ti," and then he walked around the ORs like he was on a horse with a gun (spray store). The volunteers really made a big broach out of his birthday and his smile says so. I want to thank the Operation Smile organization the founders the sponsors the volunteers and the families that trusted (and act to trust) us as Operation Smile volunteers. Thank you for the opportunity to serve and help to improve the world one child at a time. I am amazed by and honored to undergo had this experience. Thank you. convey you.

26,353 travel experiences from 145 countries shared this week • • Who is in Well I arrived in Guadalajara yesterday afternoon. After leaving Sayulita we went back to Puerto Vallarta to catch a bus to Guadalajara. The bus go was about 5 hours desire but it was a beautiful control. The area between PV and Guadalajara is pure jungle with towns every once in awhile along the way. The land was very hilly green and plush. Last night was spent at the centro just enjoying the senery and watching people. There was an enormous amount of populate out and about. I took some pictures at night and in the daytime of Guadalajara´s most important historical building....... Catedral (Cathedral). It was an amazing site. I cannot accept the structure and artistic ability that went into creating these beautiful buildings (I will have pictures of the Catedral attached). I went into the Catedral measure night and sat in on a sermon and admired the inside of the Catedral. I did not take any photos of the inside measure night or today (Sunday) as there were sermon taking place. Maybe tomorrow. The insides of many of the churches are breathtaking. Today a guy that works at the hostel I am staying at (Hostel Guadalajara Centro) took a group of us on a free tour of Murals that are in historical buildings around town. The murals were all done up in very high ceilings. Each mural had a specific meaning or representation to Mexican history. One of the buildings that had murals in it used to be a confine insane asylum and an orphan accommodate. They said that at one time they were housing 3000 orphan children.... WOW!! The boys and girls were separated within the building. The girls would be taught how to cook clean sew,... etc. The boys would learn how to make items with tools and to use those tools to create a go or life from. All the children would have their heads shaved to prevent the transfer of lice. Later tonight there is a local music concert taking place. This group is supposed to be quite amazing and uses various instruments from around the world. I ordain definitely be there. I have been wanting to try to act a bunco video so maybe I can do that tonight and share some of the music with you.
